The company started in Manhattan, New York, in1941. The original company was a family owned business called Manhattan Leather Bags. They started with six leatherworkers who made small leather goods, such as wallets and handbags. Miles and Lillian Cahn joined the company in 1946. They were owners of a leather handbag manufacturing business. Cahn soon took over the business. The company started making leather goods, such as wallets. Cahn developed a process for making leather strong, soft, and durable. In the 1960s the handbags became known for their quality being made out of sturdy cowhide. Most handbags at the time were made of leather pasted on cardboard material. They changed the industry.
